Dan's World 2

"A wonder let down by direction and sound"

submission: Dan's World 2
date: October 19, 2005

As a checkout operator, I relate to a lot of this stuff, its pritty damn funny. I love the selection of camera angle also, as well as the hand drawn doodle style of the whole thing.

However I really feel this could have been a lot lot better had there'd been more work with sound and direction. The flash is virtually mostly silent, with a few sound effects. Forcably happy "elevator music" like stuff, or perhaps a very quiet shop ambience would have given it a little more depth, without any extra animation work. Story-wise, the flash felt pritty anti-climatic. Whether this is the desired effect or not I dont know, however it would have been awesome if the baby wrestling sketch was the last as the reaction of the bookshop assistant would work as a climax to the flash. The audience relate to the attendant through the toon as he is the only consistent charecter, and to see him avenge his troubles is the highlight of the flash for me, and I'd imagine the audience.

However, these are small worries, and as you can see by the 8 score, I loved this flash. You have probably made the daily five, but if you improve a little, you could be an awesome frontpage artist. Keep at it you.

Author's Response:

Thanks, pal... Yeah I considered using muzak in the background. But for some reason, I just never followed through with it. The hum of people shopping is a good idea too. I'll have to look around on the internet for something like that, cuz I don't have a portable sound recorder...

I'm usually not a fan of your work at all. Repetitive meaningless music videos dont usually do it for me, but you really outdid yourself with this one! I could'nt stop laughing all the way through this, definatly one of your best.

Blvrd. of Broken Dreams

"Fairly good."

date: October 2, 2005

However the techniques used in this movie are fair to basic to compensate for its score, and half the art appears stolen. What do I mean? Well the garage background is on half the "Perspective tutorial"s out there. Even if you did make it, its a real shame you chose not to use the technique to produce an original setting. The legendary frog head seems to be ripped directly from one of his own movies. As well as this, I would'nt be surprised at all if you found the snow particle producer as well as the running cat loop from flashkitDOTcom.

If you ignore these elements of the movie, you have a very very poorly produced film. Gradient fills, one colour settings, gradients put to terrible use, white outlines around the movie due to bad scaling, and painfully long shots such as a sign (Comprised of text which relates to the song lyrics in a very unimaginative way, on a rounded rectangle).

On the bright side though, this certainly is'nt bad at all for your first movie. Dispite your skills, you've produced a music video which certainly appeals to the Newgrounds audience. However you have much improving to do if you want to stay ahead of the game. You have fairly good directing skills for producing movies with mass-appeal. However if this recieves a daily award or frontpage, I wont be happy at all.

Besides, I hate Greenday <3

rexCo - An adventure of epic proportions, and one of the few where I've seen the star syndicate themselves, however nothing stood out. 2/5

NES - A smooth and stylish part, approached rather nicely, but not humerous really. 3/5

Zephyrlot - Abstract niceness, but again, nothing outstanding or humerous. 3/5

HandheldGameClock - Short, Sweet, Hysterically funny 4/5
