Help me help you!

Posted by mrSimon Jan. 29, 2009 @ 1:48 PM EST

I've been developing a flash based point and click adventure engine for quite a while now, and I'm near the final stages of development. I've based everything around the simplicity of just using a mouse and the left mouse button, whilst aiming not to sacrifice the amount of depth you can develop with a point and click adventure.

I'm hoping that rather developing a point and click game where you have to manage items, travel the world and think about the strangest combination of items in order to solve puzzles, I'm hoping that games put together with this engine will serve as a method to better connect with the story and characters.

Meeting a few major bugs during development, I believe I've ironed out shit like this, so I should be ready to go soon!

.

What I'm after is a little feedback from you peeps..

In typical point and click adventures, be it online and off.. what are your pet peeves? What little bits and pieces in a point and click game piss you right off?

And in addition, what would you love to see in a point and click adventure?

I hope to debut an updated version of my now canned "WADEANGRY" game on Deviantart within the next fortnight, before beginning to develop a full game in collaberation with an artist... (Not sure whether I should say yet... but he is an artist currently nominated for Movie of the Year)

I have no problem with point and click games actually. I do have a question though, will all the stages / rooms be static, or will they move as the character goes in a certain direction (wade goes right, so stage goes left, kinda thing?

I'm going to figure out a way to do this... but currently, the level is static.

Above all, it should be funny. And possibly include some method of getting help if you're stuck, though not babysit the player (for example: you can call someone on your cell for help, but he/she'll get pissed if you call too much and will stop answering you)

Jan. 29, 2009 | 2:37 PM mrSimon responds:

I'm going to include tips in the game... say, if you click on 6 things that are unrelated to the plot, the player will just say something like "Dang, I ought to find so-and-so". The 'helpline' I had in the WADEANGRY demo won't be in the new game.

The thing I dislike about the most point and click games is that you can carry all the items in the game at the same time. There should be a limit or a weight system or something. There is a computer game that already did something like that but I think it makes a lot more sense if you can't carry 5000 items in one bag.

Jan. 29, 2009 | 2:39 PM mrSimon responds:

It makes logical sense, although zipping to your storage area every time you want to try something new will be a pain. It'd make sense for a console game, however this is the internet, and you can lose people in seconds.

The fact you can carry many items will have context in this upcoming game... although if I do anything after that, I ought to address it.

I'd also like it to be visible on the character that you are carrying objects... Say, if you pick up a magic ring, you can see the character wearing it.... Then characters could say differnt things depending on how you look. EG, if you go to a bar, the bartender will get you a drink. If you go in drag, he'll throw in some dirty chatup lines before getting you a drink. :P

I really like point and click adventure games...
but combining items together is really annoying...

Jan. 29, 2009 | 7:28 PM mrSimon responds:

In this engine, you "pick up" an item by click it from the bottom of the screen (All items always visible). You then click on what you want to use it with, be it something on the level itself, a person... or another item in your bar.

Yeah, the tips system sounds good. I mean, in some point and clicks, the way to advance is so ridiculous you never would have thought of it.

Originality would be a plus. If the game is original, it's sure to be a winner.

And test and test again for bugs. Nothing pisses me off more than playing through a point and click, then doing something that leads to a screen where I have no choice but to restart.

And it might be a good idea to be able to unlock Easter Egg's. By completing a little side thing in the game, you could watch a short animation at the end or something.

Looking forward to the game. Good luck!

There are a whole bunch of features I've yet to implement, but already I notice a few inconsistencies in the engines design (Such as double clicking to skip dialogue, but single clicking if its complete...), so I'll be looking at them.

The artist I'm collaberating with is in charge of story, writing, art and design.. and I'm confident he'll blow your minds with some mad shit.

The engine is built for cutscenes, which there will be plenty of !
